Yeah the BART ticket system isn't the best for one-off trips. It's designed more that you store a value on your ticket and you top up the same ticket as required - almost like a paper-based prepaid smartcard. They had their Sydney-style ticket barriers long before Sydney - since the late 70s at least.

Do you know if they have smartcard ticketing there?I thought the same company that was doing Sydney's smartcard had already done one for San Francisco?

Cheers...

Let's hope that what Jesus saves wasn't at one of the banks that went under!

Those "Raging Grannies" are entertaining. Clever, and snarky. I bet hanging out with them would be fun.

A protest in San Francisco? Imagine that. Funny that Jesus was around again for you, Erk. Too bad he split before you could find out which bank he uses.

Don't be fooled, Erk. In some places in the U.S. (such as Compton) it's likely that someone would be shot for an iPod. It's funny that you mentioned Compton. I was going to warn you to stay away from there 'cause I know it's relatively close to LAX. But riding the train through shouldn't be a problem. Just don't get off at the station.

Here's a tip: If you've got an audio file with information that's panned hard left/right, you can actually transcode that file from stereo to mono, and the audio will now be heard on both the left and right channels. I know it sounds counter intuitive. But doing this basically flattens the stereo image to one channel, and then the device reading the file (iPod, computer, etc.) sends the same information to both the left and right speakers. It's not a true stereo image, but at least it's not being sent to only one speaker. I actually transcoded Erk Pod 176 to mono so it'd be easier to listen to on headphones.

Interesting stuff, guys. Funny that non-geocachers are called Muggles. Surprised to see in Jen's comments that she'd be interested in geocaching. I would be, too. Good thing she and I can communicate through the comment section on this site instead of actually talking to each other. That being said, we do have a hand held GPS device. Maybe we should give geocaching a go some day.

What an exciting episode!

The whole time, I was wondering "Are they going to find it?" I also enjoyed the background noises, especially the little chirping birdies.

Listening to this makes me want to give geocaching a try myself. I must remember to bring my inhaler. ;)

Train noises! Yay! :)
I found it interesting that some girl decided to try and get across the tracks after the alarms were going off to indicate a train was coming.... as you just happened to be recording a podcast about that same subject.

Great show!
